Job Title: Trading & Portfolio Management Assistant, Fixed Income (Entry- to-mid level position)

Job Description:

The Fixed Income Trader plays an integral role on the trading desk and works closely with the Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income as well as the Equity Traders and Portfolio Management Administration team to handle and assist with the day-to-day trading for the firm. This role is primarily responsible for executing fixed income trades across multiple custodians and for all accounts under STMMs management. As a member of the trading desk, the Fixed Income Trader will also back-up the equity traders and will be responsible for all executions including fixed income, equity purchase and sales and some option trading. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail and follow-through. Critical thinking and the ability to multi-task in a fast pace environment is required. This is an exempt position and reports to the Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income.

The general duties for this job consist of:

  • Trade placement/execution for fixed income trading as well as equity securities including common stocks, mutual funds, exchange traded funds and options by utilizing multiple execution platforms while ensuring best execution practices; This includes monitoring and processing trades, i.e.: trade input, trade execution and allocation process post execution
  • Book trades and maintain restrictions as required on trade order management system, Charles River Development (CRD)
  • Mediate and resolve trade related/settlement issues, pre/post trade instructions and communication with broker dealers, custodian banks and Client Operations department
  • Provide detailed information regarding trade errors; actions taken to prevent issues from re-occurring and financial impact to the firm
  • Interface with Portfolio Manager as well as other internal and external parties related to trade execution or securities monitoring
  • Communicate market conditions to Chief Executive Officer/Chief Investment Officer, Portfolio Manager-Fixed Income, Director of Equity Research and other members of the investment team
  • Support Portfolio Manager on tracking soft dollar trade commissions from all participating broker-dealers
  • Ad-hoc reporting and special projects as requested by Portfolio Manager
  • Establish and maintain procedures in collaboration with Portfolio Manager
  • Other Administrative duties of the Trading Department (scanning, filing, etc.)
  • Other tasks as requested by direct supervisor, Chief Equity Trader, CEO/CIO or COO

Portfolio Administration:

  • Support Portfolio Manager with the review of accounts to ensure they are invested properly according to guidelines
  • Under the supervision of the Portfolio Manager, work with Relationship Managers (RMs) to review new accounts and ensure accurate and timely investment
  • Support Portfolio Manager with the review accounts as contributions, distributions, objective changes or other changes are made to ensure accounts are in line with investment guidelines/strategy after such events take place
  • Monitor and review outliers (at the security and account level) and follow up on performance question from RM’s or clients
  • Ensure groups and data in the portfolio management system is up to date and coded appropriately
  • Prepare and review monthly and quarterly reports to ensure all accounts are in line with STMM guidelines and the account objective and restrictions.

Education, Experience and Other Requirements:

  • 2-3 years trading and/or work experience, preferably at Investment Advisory firm or part of Student Managed Fund. Bachelor degree (or track to complete) in business, finance or accounting preferred. Knowledge of the investment industry and financial markets. Ability to use MS Office including MS Word, Excel and Outlook. Knowledge of Bloomberg and Charles River are considered plus.
